Just finished another eight week session of the Clearing Clutter Support Group. These groups are always filled up with amazingly brave participants (mostly women and occasionally men too) who come out voluntarily to work on themselves and their clutter issues. This group was no exception as the woman who came courageously showed up week after week.
There wasn’t perfect attendance by any means as life happens and these women tend to have a lot going on and often are leading very chaotic and sometimes quite stressful lives. Week 1 the participants come in a little sheepish and shy wondering who else is going to be there. They soon realize that this is a safe place to be and they are not alone. They realize that everyone has a different degree of difficulty and yet they find a common ground. The conversation flows from here on in and people become fast friends and offer support to each other.
We always do a pre and post evaluation with each individual in the group and everyone always makes improvements. The areas we measure are the degree of clutter, acquiring more stuff and the ability to let go of possessions. Participants are often surprised and proud of their accomplishments. They start to look at what they have accomplished rather than what they haven’t.
Eight weeks is really just a drop in the bucket though. Individuals may have been struggling with this issue for a long time so it will not be fixed overnight. It is a process and participants are always welcome to come back a second time. Even though a lot of the material is repeated individuals are always at a different stage in their life and with different participants it is always a new group with new insights and lessons to learn.
This support can also continue on in the form of a Peer Support Group which meets every week in the community and is run by one of the previous group members for any of the graduates of the program. They meet for coffee and then move on to lunch. As we say “Clearing Clutter is always easier with support” and having others to be accountable to can be a huge motivational factor for some of us to get to that challenging project or task.
Next Clearing Clutter Support Group will be offered in January of 2014 and is open to the community (anyone living in London, Ontario)
